A good Read
This is a topic that everyone should be talking about, and this is the book that everyone needs to read to understand it. Fascinating narrative. Overwhelming research. I was alternatively entertained and outraged from start to finish, and fully convinced of the author's thesis--adult consensual prostitution must be legalized--by the end.
shows how far we are from making it safe OR sane...
I have a very busy work schedule and yet I make time to enjoy this book. Its intro is captivating. It provides an objective approach to a difficult subject, and the information I've read reconciles well to fact that, safe to say, few people know in depth. Well done.
Holy moly, changed my view on sex work in one book.
Think legalizing sex work is about more street walkers? Nope, quite the opposite. It's about indoor work, on their terms not their pimp's. Once it's legal to advertise they won't have to walk the streets. Once it's legal they won't be afraid to go to the police for help. Once it's legal they can afford a few things like rent, food and clothing.
Getting Screwed delves into the history of sex work as well as so many contemporary stories. Those politicians who want to see an end to sex? Yeah, they're probably trying to hide their own behavior by taking it out on those considered lower in society. It's time to raise them up to regular citizenship. No more second class stuff. I remember reading John Steinbeck and nearly all the books I read mention sex work. It wasn't always so puritanical as it is today. Will life be perfect with legalized sex work? Of course not, no job is every perfect. Will it be better? Yes. Mutual sex, mutually agreed upon price, mutual transaction. Rape, assault, theft still illegal. Now the women will be free to go to the cops rather than getting screwed by them. Cops have to uphold the law, it's their job. So why not make the law change so they can protect these women rather than arresting them?
Great easy read. I dare you.
This book helped me to understand that what I've learned about adult consensual prostitution from the media over the years - and misconceptions I've inferred from movies and television - is primarily very inaccurate. I highly recommend this book to anyone, regardless of what his or her moral stance is on sex work. Clearly, there is a difference between adult consensual sex work, and children or adults being enslaved for the purpose of prostitution. If both those concepts are thought of as the same thing, effectiveness is lost when trying to help people who are forced against their will to be in the sex trade, and progress can't be made in preventing these things from happening. An honest discussion is needed by politicians, community members, and the media.
Bass cites all her sources and as far as I can tell (I'm not a journalist or statistician), the research is thorough, and the conclusions and suggested solutions are completely logical and sane.
Some people write notes at the end of their reviews noting that they were given a book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. That's not the case here. I bought the edition of this book, and halfway through reading, I bought a copy for my mother. She's read it since then, and while having trouble understanding all the points of view, she enjoyed reading it (I won't try to speak on her behalf and keep this to a single review ;) ).
Even Bass's first book, <i>Side Effects...</i> I never received for free. I've purchased... I think 5 copies of that over the last 9 years. In fact, it might be time for this author to begin sending me free things.
In <i>Getting Screwed</i>, my eyes glazed over a little when I reading sections with a lot of numbers, but I've never been much of a numbers guy, and those parts were few and far between. Some people will appreciate numbers more than me and be able to digest them more easily.
I think I would have liked to read more about the perspective of "Johns", and more interviews with "lower" and "middle class" prostitutes. Though I assume getting interviews for a topic like this would be quite challenging, and probably not necessary.
I'm going to keep things simple and just give this book 5 stars. It will prove to be a valuable reference to future researchers and add to the growing body of human knowledge and understanding. And if the issue of sex work is given the consideration it deserves, will save lives and improve the health of our society.
